What is a GRIT Workout?
Created by Les Mills, the GRIT workouts are made up of 3 series which are GRIT Cardio, GRIT Athletic and GRIT Strength. Each one is a HIIT workout (high intensity interval training) and designed to target and improve key areas of the body. These workouts will push you to train like an athlete as they increase your cardiovascular fitness, build lean muscles and burn that unwanted fat rapidly.
What is GRIT Cardio?
GRIT cardio is specifically designed to focus on your cardiovascular fitness which burns calories faster than most HIIT workouts as you increase speed throughout the session. The workout involves using bodyweight exercises which are highly intense and challenging but necessary to get you fast results that increase your fitness levels immediately.
Although GRIT cardio is an intense body weight exercise, it uses energetic music to motivate you through the session so you stay on track and focused. You also have professional trainers guiding you through the class to edge you on and support you until you finish.
What are the benefits of GRIT cardio?
- Accelerated boost in cardiovascular fitness levels
- Fast results in a short period of time
- Rapid calorie burn
- Builds lean muscles
- Increases your speed and focus
- The workout is only 30 minutes long
- Improves your aerobic fitness
- It’s a full body workout
- You don’t need any equipment
- It’s a virtual class so you can do it at home
Are there any cons to GRIT cardio?
This workout requires a lot of cardio and jumping which can create an intense feeling, so if you’re not use to cardio, you will run out of breath more quickly. However, the more you practice grit cardio the easier it will get and you’ll feel accomplished when you finish the class.
What do you need for GRIT Cardio?
Other than a device to watch and join in on the virtual class, there isn’t any other equipment necessary. You will most likely need a towel and water for when you complete the workout and you should wear comfortable non-restrictive workout gear.

Although GRIT strength is an intense and difficult workout, you will exercise to energetic music that is designed to motivate you alongside personal trainers who guide and support you. They will push you to go harder and to complete the class so you can reach your fitness goals in no time.

- Creates excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC)
- Gives you full body strength
- It’s only 30 minutes
- You only need to do the class twice a week for fast results
Are there any cons to GRIT strength?
Les Mills GRIT strength has been reviewed as the hardest workout of all 3 GRIT series as it uses weights and barbells in-between lunges, jumps, squats and more intense and hard impact moves and you don’t get a break in between sets. You’ll need a certain level of fitness to complete this workout so its not advised for beginners who are not use to HIIT or fast-paced cardio exercises.
You can try body pump or body combat and once you feel like you’ve got the hang of it, you can look to move on to the GRIT workouts.
What do you need to do a GRIT strength class?
You need the right equipment for this workout, a barbell and weight plates are used and LES Mills recommends their SMART bar is best to use for these classes.
It’s up to you on what weight plates you use, depending on your level of strength, make sure you don’t opt for ones that will cause you any injury.
As it’s a virtual class you’ll also need access to a device to watch and join in on such as a smart TV, laptop, tablet or phone with connection to WIFI or data.
